Used mostly in diet soft drinks, but the second most common is in oral hygiene products. Some of them are nutritive (they do give some calories) 2/3 of people in america are either obese or overweight. This is associated with the different forms of sugar. But usually a very small number of calories compared to the amount that other sweeteners provide. The us consumes half of all the non-nutritive sweeteners in the world. Discovered in 1878 by constantin fahlberg and ira remsen. Fahlberg was working with saccharin and noticed a sweet taste. This compound was saccharin because it was given the same sweetness as saccharose, which is the chemical name for sugar. Published a number of articles with respect to the use and synthesis of saccharin.
