Document Summary

Chemistry = study of matter & its properties, the changes that matter undergoes, & the energy that is associated with those changes. Matter: the stuff you see, smell, taste, & touch; anything with mass & volume. Properties: the set of characteristics (this can be a long list) that give each substance its unique identity. 4: gases gas is the simplest phase of matter. Study the kinetic-molecular theory of gases: a simple theory that explains ideal gas behavior. Non-ideal (real) gases: molecules are big & sticky . Fills & assumes the shape of its container; & diffuses &mixes in all proportions with other gases. Molecules of a gas are separated by large distances & interact weakly with each other, if at all. Density: mass/volume (density of sol or liquid = 1g/cm^3) (density gas = 1 mg/cm^3 (1000 times smaller density much less matter than other phases)) Gas density is very dependent on temperature and pressures at temperatures ~300k.
