BIOL 373 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Carcinus Maenas, Biostatistics, Statistical Parameter
Document Summary
The primary objective of statistics is to infer the characteristics of a group by analyzing the characteristics of a sample from that group. (zar) Sample: the entire collection of items (group) under consideration. Estimate info about the population by looking at sample. Parameter: a subset of the population for which data are collected, a measure that characterizes a population, an estimate of a population parameter, based on a sample. Infer that pest frequency should diminish with increased cost, convert to a mathematical formula. Assumptions underlie the extrapolation of information from the sample to the population. Random sampling: these assumptions assure the sample reflects the entire population. Generally, a sample from a population should be random. Each item must have an equal chance of being sampled. The inclusion of any item must not influence the chance of sampling any other item. Ex: large trap holes: extrapolation will be wrong if it"s large crabs are easier.
