Chromosome has a short arm (p) and long arm (q); The centromere, which joins two together, is made up of a protein-dna complex and is pulled upon by microtubules. The telomeres are at the ends of the chromosomes, they cap the sister chromatids (each ds dna) so there is no free dna; and the kinetochore is in the middle. When you start to go through meiosis or mitosis, after replication, sister chromatids (tightly wound) are attached by centromere. If you want to see something at the end of the day, you need to make these cells divide and stop when it gets to metaphase. When you culture it, you can put in growth factors that will make the cell divide. You can lock all these cells in metaphase by giving these cells coltramide? which is a microtubule poison so sister chromatids at the centre of the cell can"t be pulled apart. Humans: 23 pairs of chromosome; 22 autosomal, 1 sex.
