BIOL 200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Cluster Analysis, Numbat, Gtpase
Document Summary
Lecture 16 - bioinformatics, phenomics, & the fringe. Bioinformatics = using computer science approaches to process biological data: assembly and quality assessment in terms of sequencing, annotation of the genome sequence (various components and where they are) and sequence analysis. Programs for sequence analysis: blast = basic local alignment search tool. Compare it to a sequence to another dna sequence: you have now blasted the sequence. Look for an exact match somewhere in the database. Extend match locally: looks for local matches given a few mismatch pairs, allow this to happen to get a better alignment. Allows for short gaps in alignment: introduces gaps to make an even better alignment. Comparison of the regions of human nf1 protein and ira protein in yeast show signi cant sequence similarity. Similar amino acid sequences: nf1 = neuro bromatosis 1 elephant-man syndrome .
