Document Summary

Metabolism: this is the sum of all chemical reacions in a cell. It can be divided further into anabolism and catabolism. Anabolism: these reacions require energy and include replicaion, synthesis, making starch and condensaion. Catabolism: these produce energy and include digesion of food and hydrolysis. Thermodynamics: energy cannot be created nor destroyed, when energy is transferred, some is lost as heat. These energy conversions are driven by the tendency of energy to become evenly distributed. Reacions occur from highly localized to dispersion, which increases disorder (higher probability). Amount of energy dispersed is g or free energy". This happens in 2 ways: a reacion creates disorder (which is a change in entropy) s, a reacion releases heat (change in enthalpy) h. In this case entropy outside a system increases. Negaive free energy is favourable and occurs spontaneously. Types of energy reacions: h and +ts = spontaneous (exergonic) always free energy, h and ts = only occurs spontaneously at a certain temperature.
