Document Summary

Metabolism ---- all chemical reactions in a cell: anabolic: reactions link simple molecules together to make complex ones. These are energy storing reactions which require energy. Dna replication, protein synthesis and making of starch: catabolic: reactions break down complex molecules into simpler ones which release energy. E. g. digestion of food molecules for energy generation. Energy conversions: way, potential energy ----> kinetic energy ----> heat energy. Chemical bond energy in h2 and o2 ----> rapid molecular motions in h2o ----> heat energy. Hot cup of coffee will cool down, but never warm up on its own. A balloon will lose air, but never gain it on its own. A swimmer can dive into water, but it"s never thrown out of the water by the concerted movement of water molecules: two more complications of thermodynamics. A and b are such that forward and reverse reactions take place at the same rate g = 0.
