SOCI-225 Lecture 2: Environmental Criminology, Rational Choice Theory, Routine Activities Theory
Document Summary
All about the location and whether it is prone to more opportunities for crime. Based on the 2 assumptions: people"s choices are made to maximize pleasure and minimize pain, people evaluate the options present to them and choose what they think is going to satisfy their needs. Based on premises that people are rational thinkers. Routine activities theory: humans are creatures of habit, crimes are expected outcomes of routine activities, 3 factors need to be present at the same time for a crime to happen, an offender, suitable target, absence of capable guardian. This explains the variety of crime according to time (mornings, nights on weekends, etc) and space (homes, places, alleys, workplaces). Offenders who are motivated commit crimes when the suitable targets are present, and they don"t have a capable guardian around them. In rat, the offender is considered a given. The presence of a suitable target and the capable guardian is analyzed.
