PSYC-339 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Supervised Injection Site, Motivational Interviewing, Binge Drinking
Document Summary
Excellent for social support and decreasing stigma and works well for those who agree. Resistant to attempts to research: aa groups don"t want to be researched. Disease models: you are born an addict and will always be an alcoholic ( this is something you have which needs treatment ) 12 step program relies on the disease model; abstinence is key: once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic with the model (which often includes religion/sin) But with groups like aa, must be voluntary; and there is 70-90% dropout do to the strict rules; women tend to find the large number of men overwhelming. 30-60% stay off the drug when aa is successful (but relapse is common with all drugs) Community resources such as dropin groups tend to be ineffective and limited; some resources such as mental health association can help. Inpatient programs: typically 3 month programs, no more effective than outpatient programs, and leaves them unprepared for returning home and to reality.
