PSYC-339 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Opioid, Cerebral Cortex, Cherry Blossom
Document Summary
The 3 subgroups are : internalizing disorders, externalizing disorders, thought disorders. Etiological factors create and sustain psychopathology; biological, developmental, behavioural, cognitive, emotional, cultural, social, interpersonal factors all factors play a role in most illnesses. Many models focus onone area/factors (ie why does one develop panic disorder versus anxiety disorder). In reality all factors take a role in creating and sustaining illness. Cannot be single gene all are polygenetic: many genes play a role. Genes determine the window (boundaries) within which one can be mentally ill, while environment determines severity (the expression). Someone can be predisposed to schizophrenic, but in the proper environment it may not develop. Ex height is 90% genetic but 10% environment is important (health, nutrition). The longitudinal study (18-38 years of age) examined mental health. Certain symptoms may cluster together, and play a role in multiple disorders.
