Delayed sleep phase syndrome: difficulty falling asleep before the early hours of the morning--- person is exhausted when they have to get up in the morning. May be judged as lazy, or may be believed to be having poor bedtime habits (ie videogaming) Treated by brightlight exposure first thing in the morning; sharp signal that the new day is starting. Goal is also to reduce exposure to light in the evening. Melatonin can also be used, when taken in the evening to directly impact the internal clock. But melatonin is not classified as a drug: may be deregulated, the dosage of it may be inaccurate, other substances may have been added. We also have natural endogenous melatonin: and having a high dose of melatonin may. Bedtimes must be moved forward in the clock (ie cannot go to bed earlier, must use sleep deprivation techniques). Once ideal sleep time is achieved, it must be maintained (easier said than done)
