Pain is a subjective experience reported by the individual: one can minimize (the stoic), exaggerate for attention (the seeker). Even knowledge of the language (adjectives) to describe to the doctor. Chronic pain is a condition in itself/ it is different from acute pain in its brain chemistry. Test results may appear normal with chronic pain. The following may or may not be present: 1)body language: restricted movement, posture, repetitive rocking, protecting (eg the joint) 2)facial expressions 3)withdrawn, apathetic. 3)disrupted appetite 4) sleep deprivation increases pain, but pain makes sleep difficult (bidirectional) 5) vocalizations: crying, 6) physical indicators: high bp, vomiting, paleness, weakness. Frequent re-rating: the person compares their own pain from day to day. Pain is multidimensional: it is sensory, affective, evaluative (coping beliefs can i cope? intensity (interference in life activities) Some receptors that communicate pain also communicate other sensations (ex plain can be felt as a burning sensation)
