Document Summary

Vaccination issues midterm 2 onwards: brief overview, history of vaccination, general vaccination issues, psychological issues: hpv. Vaccination began with smallpox; observation that discharge from a pock could give another person a single sore, and then they would not get smallpox in the full blown sense. Thus exposure to a small amount of smallpox provided immunity produced antibody response without putting the person at risk of full blown outbreak. The more of the population vaccinated, the more likely cases will be non-communicable (ie no epidemic spread). Over 100 strains of hpv; some are more likely to be transmitted, and strains differ in severity. High prevalence of infections: 60%+ have had hpv as sexually active adults. But only 2 of these strains can move cells from precancerous to cancerous (strain 16 and 18), causing cervical cancer. Most women can fight these strains off, but some will develop chronic infection: chronic infection long term leads to cervical cancer.
