PSYC-307 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Margarine, Gilgit-Baltistan, Corn Oil
Document Summary
With depression there is immunosuppression of t and b cells. Related to some cancers, which involve cell mutations that go undetected. Moderating factors: how depression effects people depends on certain traits (ex presence of stress, socioeconomic status, age, physical activity) Biological mechanisms: corticotropin (increases cortisol),hpa axis, sympathetic nervous system. Disease relevance: chemical changes in brain, autoimmune disorder, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory disorder, cancer, sickness behaviour/depression. Other contributions to inflammation: environmental factors: poor diet, inadequate fruit and veg and fiber; diet predominantly highly processed foods. Good fat versus bad fat; triglycerides protect organs, insulate, provide reserve of essential fatty acids; saturated fats: hydrogenated or trans fats increase inflammation. Healthy triglycerides: monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, polyunsaturated like avocado, fish both have anti-inflammatory effects. Need balance of omega 3 and 6 (omega 3 from cold water fish, flax seeds, walnuts) (omega 6 from animal fat, margarine, corn oil)
