Document Summary

Plato believed children are born with innate knowledge. Aristotle believed children"s knowledge is rooted in experience. Jean-jacques rousseau believed children are born with an innate sense of justice and morality. John locke believed the infant is a blank slate or tabula rasa. Charles darwin recorded his own child"s growth and development in a baby biography, such as reflexes and perceptual abilities. An infant not showing reflexes is believed to be a neurological problem. Many theories contribute to questions about development. Maturational theory: development reflects the natural unfolding of a pre-arranged biological plan in which experience matters less. Ethological theory: behaviours acquired are those that are adaptive. Contrast to sensitive period in which the cut off times are not abrupt, but are gradual onset and offset. Imprinting: the formation of an emotional bond between the child and the first moving object it sees when born, usually the mother. Development is determined by how a child resolves conflicts at different ages.
