PHIL-330 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Noble Lie, Polytheism, Miasma Theory
Document Summary
Erie of law : will govern the torie told; the laws of (cid:862)piety(cid:863) 1. the gods must never be presented as causing harm or evil; they can never be a source of evil because they are wholly good. Any stories in which the gods cause undue/unjustified/unnecessary suffering must be expelled. Any punishments given by the gods must be corrective and make the person better (no punishment for the sake of punishment). If they do something harmful, it is a benefit we have misinterpreted. 2. gods cannot be made to change or deceive others: they may not deceive others or change form to disguise themselves. It would be illogical for something as perfect as god to want to change form, which implies a more perfect state exists. The gods do not need lies because they do not fear enemies, and do not need to lie to each other; to lie is to change or deceive.
