PHIL-250 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: A Priori And A Posteriori, Class Conflict, Arthur Schopenhauer
Document Summary
Morality as a construct: which can be modified. Humanity has failed to reach full potential because of morality; we question the moral values, but not its worth. Morality is not transcendental; we forge morality ourselves but fail to recognize that because we have constructed the system, we are also responsible for its changes. We fail to recognize that morals are not apriori (in kantian sense) Morality has limited human flourishing in the sense that we believe we have no control over it (an eternal binding force). When we believe we have no control, we fail to change improper values. As a (cid:272)ulture, (cid:449)e are (cid:272)o(cid:373)i(cid:374)g to slo(cid:449)ly re(cid:272)og(cid:374)ize the (cid:271)aseless(cid:374)ess of (cid:373)orality: there is(cid:374)"t a(cid:374)y apriori base and any claims to this are false. Both dangerous, for the loss of absolute values, but exciting in the promotion of change. Many people inform morality in relation to absolutes, including the absolute god.
