As the islamic world began to grow, identifying features of the movement became more or less prominent in everyday society. There were other channels for authorities tradition from the hadiths to the sunna. The hadiths fleshed out the life of the prophet. The sunna grounded the customs of the umma in a prophet exemplar. In time, 5 clear pillars of practice emerged. Members of the umma could recognize one another across cultural lines. "there is no god, but god, and muhammed (pbuh) is the prophet of god". Regimented prayer directed at the open god preformed 5 times a day. All those who can should give alms to those who are in need. During the holy month of ramadan, it is necessary to fast from dawn to dusk. Just as the prophet returned to mecca, so must his followers if they are able to. Once in mecca, they will go to masjid al-haram.
