HIST-308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Avignon Papacy, Pope Gregory Xi, Pope Urban Vi
Document Summary
Catherine"s specific apostolic mission was to bring the patriarch of rome home. In 1377, she succeeded, convincing pope gregory xi to go back to the see of peter: after catherine. One year later, in 1378, gregory xi died. When the college of cardinals met to elect the new pope, drama ensued. The italians demanded an end to the line of french popes, leading to urban vi: urban vs clement. The tension between urban and the cardinals led to a breakway faction. They elected another pope, clement vii, who happened to be genevan and who went back to. This began the great western schism, which lasted from 1378 to 1417 ce, meaning that europe had 2 popes during that era. Politically, the rulers of europe thus had to decide which pope to support and their loyalties often shifted: two popes. Generally, the line of popes succeeding urban vi is regarded as genuine, with the avignon popes being called anti-popes.
