Post rebellion reforms: mughal empire formally disbanded. The emperor was sent to exile and buried in an unmarked grave: 1858 india act: disbands the eic and institutes crown rule. India is now ruled by a viceroy appointed from london. Government affairs are conducted by the secretary of state for india from the india office: reorganization of indian army, recruitment of "martial races". Army increased its ratio of british to indian soldiers. Britain makes less effort to take over land in india. They begin to recognize indian princes as legitimate. Queen victoria makes a proclamation to issue indians that britain did not have the right or desire to impose convictions on their subjects. Native schools receive more funding: material improvement of railways and canals, racial boundaries continue to harden.
