The indian independence movement: empires and nation states. Nations rest on homogenity and the equality of citizens. As nations go, india is incredibly large and diverse. Today, it is the most populous nation state. It gains its coherence from a shared experience and struggle against british rule. Without britain and those opposing britain, india would not exist as a nation. It did not "balkanize" further: controversy over the ilbert bill of 1883. Proposal to allow indian judges to try europeans in criminal cases. Derived from a liberal orientation within british politics, but it was met by extreme protest among british residents in india, who launched a "white mutiny" of protest and civil disobedience.
