Document Summary
Thomas aquinas tried to use aristotle"s hylomorphism to argue for immortality of the soul. Aristotelian reason was therefore made to serve christian faith. He also applied the quaestio method to the definition of transubstantiation. He had already defined the proper means of a eucharist at innocent iii"s iv lateran council: transubstantiation. Everything consists of a substance of which it is made. During the eucharistic sacrament, the substance of the bread and wine transform into the substance of body and blood. The accidents of the bread and wine remain the same. Thomas borrows liberally from aristotle for the purposes of christianity. He put reason to work for faith: bonaventure. Just as rationally sound and well educated as thomas was. He was more openly influenced by the mystical, dionysian tradition: augustine and dionysius. The dionysian tradition was passed down to the latin west by carolingian john scotus eriugena. His systematic theology took lead not just from aristotle but also francis.
