HIST-102 Lecture 5: The Black Death
Document Summary
The black death arrived by sea as the famine was already ravaging europe. Carried by the bacteria known as yersinia pestis. It bruised the bodies of those it afflicted with lesions. Many those who contracted it could expect to live for 3 to 5 days at most: the black plague afflicted all of eurasia. The entry of the plague into latin christian societies occurred via maritime trade on the black. Rats carrying fleas travelled on ships from the black sea into the mediterranean. This was because of the limited nature of the medical discipline at the time. There were lots of physicians and medicine was studied at some of the universities. The problem was that some thought the plague was passed on by the air. Searches for pnematic or respiratory treatments and cures were fruitless for most plague victims. The most effective response was quarantine and isolation of afflicted individuals. The isolation of the ill could be an abandonment.
