HIST-102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 37: Angevin Empire, Robert Guiscard, William Ii Of England
Document Summary
William i"s efforts were able to maintain the strength of the english crown when he was alive, but not after. He was widely disliked and killed in a hunting accident: henry i. The young brother of william rufus, ruled ruthlessly but effectively. When he died, the barons refused to recognize his daughter matilda. The barons supported his nephew, stephen of blois. It strengthened the local barons at the crown"s expense: henry ii. It ended with the ascension of matilda"s son, henry ii in 1154. He inherited a crown that meant little in relation to the feudal power of the barons: the angevin empire. Henry ii was well positioned to strengthen the monarchy. He was now: king of england, duke of normandy, count of anjou, duke of aquitaine, normans in the south. The normans were not out of the picture entirely. They still held power further south: norman italy.
