The empire could move with its leader and its leader"s army, since it was the leader"s interpersonal bonds that structured power. The ottonians came from saxony, but it didn"t mean saxony itself became the centre of imperial power. The urban centres of northern italy and the cultural capital of rome remained prized objectives for the hre. This would lead them into entanglements with the fractured forces of italy and the post. Carolingian western franks regrouping to the west: the house of wessex struggled to hold on against waves of danes and normans. The vast majority worked the land as peasants. Serfs traded autonomy for stability and protection: economic recovery. Agricultural innovations led to reliable surpluses in the food and liquor supply. Famine decreased, trade increased, and socio-economic stability re-emerged. Life as a peasant-serf meant a diet of bad bread, milk, eggs, honey and fish.
