French suicide rates in the late 19th century. Socially integrated people are less likely to take their lives than people who are socially isolated. People whose lives are unregulated by social ties are more likely to kill themselves. They suffer from a state of anomie". Obligations to protect and support the spouse (and eventual children) regulates their lives. Thus, married people are less likely to commit suicide. People"s feeling about their marriage range from completely satisfied and happy to complete despair and unhappiness. Married people are found to be less psychologically disturbed, healthier and live longer than those that are not married. But the marriage has to be a happy one. Mental and physical health also has an effect on satisfaction levels. Poor health = depression, lack of sleep, poor diet, or signs of physical violence.
