BIOL-108 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Mycelium, Zygomycota, Mycology
Document Summary
Introduction to kingdom fungi: mycology study of fungi. Grew out of botany: fungi are heterotrophic non-motile organisms, produce a network of branching, and cylindrical cells, hypae cylindrical cells. All connected threads make up the body of the fungus or the mycelium. This body can spread over small or large areas: fungi play a critical role in ecological function. The provides a constant source of sugar: endomycorrhizal fungi are a part of this phylum and is associated with most terrestrial plants, phylum ascomycota, diverse, large phylum of fungi. Found in a wide range of habitats: ascomycetes form sexual ascospores and meiospores and membranous sac called ascus, phylum basidiomycota, large and very complex, found in soil, litter and wood, most reproduction is asexual.
