Culture III
Ethnocentrism- where one culture is perceived as better than/superior. Connected to
colonization- Europeans took over aboriginal culture.
Reverse ethnocentrism- Similar to internal homophobia. Where you think your own culture is
lesser// holding up another culture.
Eurocentrism- category of ethnocentrism, entered around Europe.
Cultural globalization- Where a culture adopts another. ie. Canada adopting American customs.
Cultural relativism- studying/understanding other cultures, understanding that you yourself are a
product of your culture and to keep your mind open
Sociolinguistics- language shaping/determining our culture
Sapir-Whorf hypothesis- our language determines us. we are a product of our language.

•Pierre Bourdieu- cultural capital (something from your culture allows you to get forth in the
world- elite culture/high culture. if you have high culture you’ll get farther)
•William Graham Sumner- 3 types of norms

•Wendat- huron first nation group, Quebec City
Hazing as Resocialization
•Hazing entails resocialization new members of a group or organization such as university
fraternities or sports teams
•hazing usually involves demeaning or uncomfortable experiences
•typically involves ritual humiliation of rookie members by veterans
•Often actual abuse
•more of a male, than female activity
