PHED-2526EL Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Human Factors And Ergonomics, Anthropometry, Sports Equipment
Document Summary
Ergonomics: comes from greek words for ergo meaning work or effort and nomos meaning natural laws. Refers to the natural laws of work, or making work suit people. The study of the mental and physical capacities of persons in relation to the demands made upon them by various kids of work. Goal of ergonomics is to optimize the relationship between people, the tasks they perform, the equipment they use and the environment in which they function, in order to improve efficiency, health, safety and comfort. Anthropometry: study of individual variation in dimension. Bernardo ramazzini was one of first people to recognize that work conditions may affect health. Early description of some of physical factors considered in ergonomics: Importance of a person"s physical and cognitive attributes became more apparent in the design of military systems in ww2. Space constraints, control demand, and environmental stressors presented physical challenges. Poor design sometimes leads to loss of life and damage to expensive equipment.
