PHED-2116EL Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Neutral Axis, Friction, Resultant Force
Document Summary
Contact forces: forces that result from the physical contact of two objects i. e. muscles forces, friction and drag forces, impact forces, etc. Non-contact or filed forces: forces that do not require physical contact, but act through empty space i. e. gravitational, electrical, magnetic. External forces: forces that act upon a body from an external source i. e. gravity, ground reaction forces, buoyant forces, frictional and drag forces. Will produce internal forces or stresses within the materials from which that body is made. Internal forces: forces that originate and terminate within a body i. e. elastic or spring forces. Internal forces: forces that originate and terminate within a body i. e. elastic or spring forces i. e. forces within bones. Tension: created by a tensile pulling force applied to an object i. e. stretching forces. Muscle contractions create tension in the muscle and tendons, which pulls on attracted bones. Compression: created by a compressive force applied to an object i. e. a pressing or squeezing force.
