Protraction (forward) & retraction (backward: cervical spine. Mass or deformity: palpate for temperature. Spine should be straight & the head erect. Palpate spinous processes & sternomastoid, trapezius & paravertebral muscles. Flexion (touch chin to chest of 45 degrees) & hyperextension (lift chin toward ceiling of 55 degrees) Lateral bending right & left (move ear to shoulder of 40 degrees) Right & left rotation (turn chin to each shoulder of 70 degrees) Repeat motions while opposing force: shoulders. Inspect & compare both shoulder posteriorly & anteriorly. If reported shoulder pain, ask to point to the spot. While standing in front of patient, palpate both shoulders. Flexion (move arms forward & up of 180 degrees) & hyperextension (move arms back of 50 degrees)
