Footwear Evidence
-Footwear evidence is the most overlooked piece of evidence at a crime scene
-This occurs by ident officers overlooking footwear when they are entering a crime
scene
-This can be overlooked by criminals very often as well
The methodology of ident officers
-Locate the evidence
-Document the evidence
-Collect the evidence
-Preserve the evidence
-Analyse the evidence (sometimes, but most of the time it will be scientist doing this
Locate: Path of Contamination
-Outside:
-The original path that will be followed by the first officer, and this path will be then
followed by anyone that enters the crime scene
-This gets marked by flags, pylons, etc.
-The protection officer will be the one that states this path and ensures everyone
follows it
-In snow print, they used a grey spray paint to enhance this
-It is first photographed without the spray and then before
-Inside:
-This can happen in solid floor, dust, dirt, blood
-There is always dust on the floor which will catch a lot of prints, even if not visible
right away
-White light (bright flashlight) used first to search for where there are footprints, then
they will go and search that area with a FLS (forensic light source)
Protections
-Outdoor scenes
-Inclement weather requires you to document and collect your footprints as soon as
possible.
-A shelter build over the print can be used, like a box or blue box
-Indoor scenes
-Other officers will need to walk into the scene, therefore the documentation and
collection of this evidence is done before all else
