Function xylem cells are actually dead cells; their walls remain to function as microscopic water pipes. The walls of the xylem cells are generally ligninfied (adds toughness to the cell but still flexible). Most ferns have leaves commonly called fronds, that are compound that means each leaf is divided into several leaflets. The fronds grows as its coiled tip, the friddle head unfurls.
