Document Summary
This unit looks at some of the characteristic features and movements of the archaic period in greece. First, it considers the phenomenon of the city-state or polis , its possible origins and forms of government. A military innovation, the hoplite phalanx, is discussed next, since it was the means by which. The polis had various ways of fostering a collective identity and these are considered. The unit also looks at the collective identity of the greeks as a whole, and how it was expressed in great games such as the olympics. An offshoot of the games was the tradition of praising victors and their city-states in song; the unit glances at this tradition. The next section deals with the so-called orientalizing of greece during the archaic period, when trade with the east led to the borrowing of eastern ideas and technologies that were transformative for the greeks.
