Document Summary

Main parts of most cells : nucleus , cytoplasm , plasma membrane. Controls what comes in (permeable to some things) Lipid bilayer: basic structural framework of plasma membrane. Tail is hydrophobic (non-polar), head is hydrophilic (polar) Glycolipids - cell identity markers (like a fingerprint) Attached to phospholipid heads or to integral proteins. Concentration : i. e. co 2 (high in icf), o 2 (low in ecf) Most prominent feature of a cell and is enclosed by the nuclear envelope. Nuclear pores control movement of substances b/w nucleus and cytosol. Rnas and proteins pass through by active transport process. Cytosol: fluid portion (contains water, dissolved solutes, suspended particles); also known as intracellular fluid (icf) Endoplasmic reticulum: membranous structure located outside of envelope. Smooth er : stores enzymes to break down toxins. Golgi apparatus: works w/ rer; packs mature proteins to be sent out, forms lysosomes. Lysosome: low ph, has digestive enzymes ( demolition site )
