Document Summary

Once nutrients are inside the cells, they can be oxidized by cellular respiration to generate energy in the form of atp. There are four classes of essential nutrients: essential fatty acids. => critical for human survival: essential amino acid. => essential to everyday"s diet since they are not produced naturally by the body: essential vitamins, minerals. Those provide the vast majority of metabolic energy: carbohydrates, proteins, lipids. Carbohydrates => made of carbons, hydrogen and oxygen. Mono => single sugar; molecular formula of (ch2o)n; building blocks from creating bigger carbohydrates. Disaccharides => formed from two monosaccharides; three important disaccharides are sucrose, Proteins => made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. => made of amino acids (20 amino acids). => functions: stores energy, organ protector, temperature regulator. => insulation such as myelin that covers the nerve cells. => emulsifiers to keep fat dispersed in the body fluids. Body tends to store excess fat molecules instead of using them.
