Broca"s aphasic would have difficulty telling who did what to whom. they would rely on word order. Syntax can hold items (traces) that don"t even have a spoken word there. Syntax extracts hierachy from a linear word order: the girl knew the answer by heart the girl knew the answer was wrong. Universal aspect of language that can take on one of a small number of positions, like a switch: set on or off. Set by child"s exposure to a particular language. Parameters set limits on the possible structure of language. [presumably something about how the brain works governs this]
