Pre-logical : substage 1 (2-4 yrs): symbolic function. Stuck with their thought the way it is. Collection of sounds that refer to something in the world. Use symbols in a variety of different ways. Thinking shows certain limits, style of preoperational thoughts. Substage 1 (2-4 yrs): symbolic function: centration. Focusing attention on one characteristic to the exclusion of others: egocentrism. Can only see world from their own perspective: appearance/reality distinctions. Confuse the way things look with the way things are. Centration: all of their attention on one thing and ignore everything else. Egocentrism: unaware that people see different things and that you see the same thing everyone else does (only one perspective). Substage 2 (4-7 yrs): intuitive thought: begin using primitive reasoning. But focus on appearance instead of using logic: conservation.
