This week we start examining fundamental concepts in the study of politics, beginning with power, authority and legitimacy. Last week we did a general introduction to the course and had a look at the kinds of problems and issues that politics deals with, both as a topic of study and in the world of human relations. Maclean and wood, finding a common vocabulary: political concepts. Once we acknowledge that politics is a distinct area of human life, the next step is to start studying it. To do that, we need to start building a political vocabulary. this is more difficult than it might seem, as we are about to illustrate. The phenomenon of power is a good place to start. Power is one of those funny terms that we use all the time but rarely attempt to define.
