Document Summary

In his aesthetic theory, the great 18th century german philosopher kant focused on what he called aesthetic judgements. A judgement in kant"s sense of the term is any statement or proposition that can be expressed in the general form x is a. Ice cream is something i like. (an alternative, more natural form of this judgement is i like ice cream. ) Telling the truth is the right thing to do. The first judgement expresses an evaluation based upon personal preference, the second a moral evaluation, and the third an aesthetic evaluation. Kant set out to distinguish aesthetic judgements ( x is beautiful ) from other kind of judgements, including judgements expressing personal interests ( i want x ) and moral judgements ( x is good ). To clarify what distinguished aesthetic judgements from other kinds of judgement, he considered four different aspects of them, which he called moments.
