Document Summary
Growth of extractive & service industries up to 1985. Industrialization is the period of social and economic change that transforms a human group from an agrarian society into an industrial one. This involves extensive re-organization of an economy for the purpose of manufacturing. Factors that determine industrial development: natural resources, disappointment with alternate crops, technology, investment capital, human resources, methods of communication, government policies. There was a seemingly inexhaustible supply of bauxite and oil in some islands. Bauxite is a rock which has aluminum in its core. Aluminum is used to manufacture products such as foil, pots/pans, used for transportation, telephones etc. Petroleum- a type of oil that comes from the ground, often by drilling. It can be used in the natural or refined state. It is the source of gasoline and many other products. After 1896, the alternate crops (except bananas) were not a great success mainly because of natural causes and market forces.
