Cognition: the mental processes by which we acquire and use knowledge to solve problems. Discontinuity theory staged theory (thinks that there"s a universal pattern of stages) Active child child trying to figure out the world on their own, actively trying to understand. Talks about how change occurs (we don"t learn all on our own) What is intelligence: a basic life function that helps an organism adapt to its environment, the goal of all intellectual activity is cognitive equilibrium. They also experiment and come to a conclusion: also intrinsically motivated to learn new things. Adaptation: motivated to adjust to the demands of the environment; occurs through 2 mental processes called: Assimilation: try to interpret new experiences in terms of existing ideas/schemas. Accommodation: process of modifying existing/ideas schemas to account for new experiences, change/add your ideas to accommodate for new ideas. The end result of assimilation and accommodation is adaptation and equilibrium.
