Fluctuations in cognition, mood, attention, arousal and self awareness, hallucinations, occasional incoherent speech. Disturbed sleep-wake cycle, disorientation: permanent loss, chronic, gradual onset. Loss of memory, judgment, reasoning and changes in mood, behaviour and commabilities, decrease adl"s. 5 types: alzheimer"s disease, diffuse lewy body disease, fronto-temporal dementia, creutzfeldt-jacob dementia, vascular dementia. Most common in canada those over 85 y. o. Alzheimer"s-cause unknown, meds will slow progression of symptoms: chronic condition, worse in morning and has situational fluctuations, progression variable. Lasts 6 weeks to several years: a state of mental confusion, prejudice/discrimination against a category of people (the older adult, thoughts, feelings, behaviours towards elderly that exist and operate without conscious awareness. Often generated from internalized age stereotypes of their culture: physiological and psychological aspects of aging. See it as something that was an acceptable gift. Things didn"t go the way i had hoped. Regrets: retirement: often seen as associated with passivity and seclusion.
