Social isolation is a major risk factor contributing to heart disease, comparable to physiological factors such as an inadequate diet, cigarette smoking, obesity and lack of physical activity. Communication does more than enable us to survive. It is the major way we learn who we are. Deprived of communication with others, we would have no sense of identity. Communication is the principal way relationships are created.
