Centres of written theatre in the ancient world: The likeliest theory: he lived at the end of the 4th century ad, in the gupta empire. The gupta kings were hindus and ruled most of northern india from the 4th-6th centuries. It was a golden age of art, science and theatre. Kalidasa may have been a courtier at king chandragupta ii. Kalidasa imagined the first play at the wedding of the god siva (shiva) India has a long religious tradition of dancing, and siva is known as lord of the dance . Ancient indian plays always began with religious rituals and benediction to siva. The plays were preformed primarily at religious festivals. They were performed in the palaces of kings and lords by troops of professional actors. Women were allowed to act (although some troops were all male) The audiences included men, women and every rank of society, segregated by caste system.
