Document Summary
Two main components attract attention of the caregiver to the infant\ Crying and cooing attracts proximity from the caregiver(s) There are two types of smiles that young infants exhibit. Endogenous smiles are not related ot any type of social stimulation. Its more of a reflex resulting from when an infant is in a relaxing state or when asleep. Exogenous smile is considered more of a social smile. Not a response ot any external social stimulation. Can be elicited by social interaction and is shown in response to social stimulation. Discovered in a study done in the 1970s where watson was studying how infants made mobiles move based on head turns. Found that the infants that understood the contingency were laughing more. The mastery smile reflects that the child detects a contingency between their actions and the environment and found pleasure in that and with themselves. Can use smiles to enrich their soical interactions. Becomes a useful type of communicative process.
