PSYO 2470 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Occipital Lobe, Slow-Wave Sleep, Reticular Formation
Document Summary
We spend 1/3 of our lives in asleep state. Sleep has been determined as important, because if we lack sleep, it leads to psychical and mental problems. Comparing rem sleep and non-rem sleep, the following can be noted: In rem sleep: heart rate increases, respiration rate increase, sexual arousal increased, and of course eyes movement increases. Beta and gamma waves are present in rem sleep, close to what you would see in a wake state without paying much attention to anything (but plus alpha). Why do we sleep: restoration: sleep helps us to rest and recover. *it seems that being awake it makes us more vulnerable: adaptation: sleep happens to keep us out of trouble. The researches didn"t allow participants to sleep for 40 hours, and then after the time the researches allowed them to have a recover sleep. It was observed that the time to fall asleep decreased after the 40 hours sleep depravation.
