PSYO 2470 Lecture 4: Audition
Document Summary
Blindness cuts us off of things, but deafness cuts us off of people . Critically important for communication: person to person communication, produce and receive sounds. Brings us pleasure: music connection to music though it doesn"t seem to have a functional purpose, music doesn"t nourish us, etc. Sound is audible variations in air pressure: auditory receptors detect movement of air molecules anything that can move air molecules can generate a sound, ex. Infrasonic sound: elephants can detect and produce sounds of about 15hz, can travel long distances, whales can hear up to 10hz, used to communicate long distances. Outside part of ear made up of pinna and auditory canal. Middle ear timpanic membrane: connected to ossicle bones bones amplify sound wave to transmit to fluid filled cochlea, cochlea transduces soundwaves to electrical signals the nervous system. Influences ca2+ influx into cell, which changes synaptic activity.
