Assumes each disorder is unique with its own set of symptoms and causes not very useful. Places disorders/symptoms on a continuum from non-existent to severe, based on empirical data. *the dimension uses a prototypical approach but is a little more dimensional. International classification of diseases & health related problems (icd-11) Provide a standardized system and criteria for diagnosis; aid in evaluating prognosis and treatment planning. Early versions relied on unproven theories, lacked precision, poor reliability. Dsm-ii (1980) introduced a multiaxial diagnostic system with detailed criterion for each disorder based on expert consensus. Dsm-iv moved to a prototypical approach and was empirically grounded. Each revision considers revising, maintaining or creating new diagnoses. Consideration given to neural underpinnings, family variables and genetic factors shared among a number of disorders. Disorders are clustered across a general internalizing and externalizing spectrum. Greater emphasis on developmental considerations, and the impact of gender and culture. Re-organization and revised diagnostic categories for several disorders.
