PSYO 2160 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Altricial, Precocial, Pair Bond
Mating systems
- Mating systems have different implications for mating success for males vs. females.
Reproductive effort
- Breeding involves a lot of energy and time investment, it also brings possible risks.
(vulnerability to predators).
- Breeding activity may reduce the reproductive success of the individual.
Parental care
- refers to the activities involved in the protection and maintenance of the species’ eggs or
offspring or those of a kin.
- there are 3 types: paternal,, maternal, alloparental (other than mother an father).
Offspring
Precocial: mature and mobile (after birth).
Altricial: helpless, immobile.
Monogamy
- Male and female mate with only one another during a given breeding season.
- Monogamy should result in increased fitness for a species in a given enviroment.
- Involves different dopamine receptors (to facilitate pair bond formation).
Polygamy
- Either males or females have more than one mate during a given breeding season.
- Polygyny: males mate with more than one female.
- Polyandry: females mate with more than one male per breeding season.
- Sequential polygamy: temporary bonds are made during breeding season.
